Classical Conversations Cycle 2 Week 8

We’re back from our Fall Break and going strong. Or rather, we’re working our way up to “going strong.” It takes a week or so to get back in the swing of things. But the cycle of CC waits for no man, so we’d better get our act together. The break for the winter holidays will be quickly upon us. Math I created a little skip counting “booklet” that we used in class. You are welcome to download it by clicking on the image to the right. The idea is that the child works their way from the “1” block, which has the most information to the “7” block, which…

    Laundry Organization and Child Labor

There are days when I think it would be SO much easier if I just did all the picking up and cleaning, table setting and clearing, and general chore duties around here myself. If I went that route, there would be the following advantages: It would be done. It would be done like I want it to be done. It would be done when I want it to be done. I can’t bark orders/nag incessantly at myself. On the other hand, the following things occur to me that outweigh my desire to just get things done now, quickly, and well: My children are capable . . . often of MUCH…

    Menu Plan 10/22/2013

Whew, last week was hectic! We made a few changes to the menu along the way. I tried a cauliflower crust pizza on Saturday night.  That was NOT a winner of a recipe for us, so I won’t be including it here! You can thank me later. I’m going to start posting reviews of the new recipes that we try, so I’ll mark here the ones that are new, just so that you’ll know that they’re not something we’ve tried before. If you want to check back on Saturday or Sunday, I’ll post a review of what we thought . . . and whether they’ll be showing up on the…

    Easy Halloween Decorating Ideas

So . . . this will, under absolutely no circumstances, become a home decor blog. Why? Because that is not my gift. I enjoy well appointed homes, and on occasion I do something around mine that I think is almost not embarrassing, but it’s only on occasion and only ALMOST not embarrassing. Fall, though, I LOVE! And, honestly, I’m not sure you can really go wrong with Fall decor in general.  I also really, really enjoy fun Halloween decor. Halloween isn’t my favorite holiday, but I do truly enjoy the festive feeling of dressing up, and, especially in our current neighborhood, I get very excited about the community spirit of…

The Myth of the Stay-at-Home Mom

Did you all read the post this past week on Matt Walsh’s Blog about Stay at Home Moms? I saw it shared and re-shared and shared some more on Facebook. He said some VERY nice things about stay at home moms. He did a fantastic job of advocating for his wife while she wasn’t around.  I feel sure he racked up lots of well-deserved brownie points. On the other hand, I just don’t really get why this is a conversation we seem to need to keep having. Maybe it’s just me, but of ALL the “STAY-AT-HOME” mom’s I can think of, not a single one of them . . . nary a…

    Classical Conversations Cycle 2 . . . ummmmm, wait . . . FALL BREAK!

Tin Whistle While we’ve been on break this week, I did a little browsing around for new (and fun!) ways to teach and reinforce the music theory that we’re learning during the 6 weeks of Tin Whistle at CC. Our CC Community just started Tin Whistle this past week, so we have 5 more weeks to go. I’ll be honest, Tin Whistle is not my favorite part of CC. I actually don’t mind the music theory, although I would NEVER, seriously NEVER, call myself particularly proficient in this area.  Really, what I am is a great APPRECIATOR of music.  Pre-kids we had season tickets to the Symphony for a couple…

YUMMY and Simple Gluten Free Pancakes!

We eat pancakes pretty often.  Consequently, after my husband was diagnosed with Celiac earlier this year, we spent several months on the hunt for a good gluten free pancake recipe. We ate through many a dud before finding this recipe and making some minor changes to make it really work for us.  This recipe has a good “mouth feel” and isn’t too dry.  The flavor is really nice. This is a gluten free pancake tht I will happily serve to guests who aren’t accustomed to eating gluten free because it really doesn’t taste all that different from the pancakes we used to eat. Ingredients Dry Ingredients: 1 cup brown rice…

    Menu Plan 10/14/2013

Muffins, muffins everywhere! Obviously, we enjoy a good muffin around here. Pictured above are the Gluten Free Cinnamon Chocolate Chip Muffins. I’ll share the recipe soon.  It’s just not QUITE perfected. It’s got an endorsement from 50% of the family, but 2 of us are holding out for a little more of a “Wow!” factor.  Hopefully, we’ll get there this week.  We’re also in the mood for the fall flavors of pumpkin, apples, sweet potatoes, and soup around here, but because it’s actually still pretty warm, we’re just not ready to give up the watermelon that’s still showing up at the Farmer’s Market! Plus, when you’ve got a kiddo that…

Classical Conversations Cycle 2 Week 7

One more great week of CC in the books! English There are three very simple games on the following website for reviewing Possessive Adjectives – http://www.letshavefunwithenglish.com/games/possessive_adjectives/ This is a fun little picture book about pronouns.  If you’ll go to the link at Amazon, you can flip through some sample pages of the book and see what it’s like.  History FAIR WARNING! I haven’t actually read ANY of the following books.  I have most of them on order, so I can come back and adequately review them, but right now, please consider this to be a very uneducated recommendation (there are reviews of them at Amazon, if you’d like to see those).…

Magical (Maybe) Healthy (Definitely) Chocolate Chip Oatmeal

Once upon a time, there was a sweet little girl who loved oatmeal.  The only decent tasting oatmeal her mother knew how to cook came in a box with individual packets inside. Add water or milk and microwave. Easy cheesy. The little girl LOVED oatmeal.  She would happily eat it for breakfast every.single.day. At first, her mother patted herself on the back, because her daughter loved oatmeal. Oatmeal just sounds so . . . healthy.  But, over time, the little girl’s mother began to be concerned about the amount of sugar in the little individual packages. And then there was the fact that the little girl would eat it EVERY.SINGLE.DAY.…
